UMI is a dissertation/thesis service responsible for keeping the scholarly record of doctoral and master's recipients worldwide. When UMI opened for business in 1938, their first publication was of the first dissertation written in the United States in 1861 by James Morris Whiton. Prior to UMI opening for business in the 1930's dissertations were only available on a very limited basis to research. Today, researchers everywhere recognize UMI as the publisher, cataloger, and marketer of doctoral dissertations. Its archiving service is the chosen resource for universities in the USA.
