De nombreux laboratoires travaillent sur le codage vectoriel. Cette approche vise une diminution notable de l'information transmise, en établissant automatiquement une typologie des spectres mono ou multilocuteurs par des méthodes de classification automatique. On transmet le numéro des spectres reconnus qui sont alors restitués en bout du canal de transmission; cette procédure très simple, donne des taux de transmission de l'ordre de 800 bits/s. Des méthodes voisines de transmission par segments, abaissent ces taux à 250 bits/s.
