L'effet de lentille est dit fort lorsque la lumière est amplifiée et que plusieurs images de la source sont visibles, ou que l'image est tellement déformée que la source apparaît sous forme d'arcs lumineux. Lorsque la déviation est moins importante et l'image de la source seulement légèrement déformée, on parle d'effet de lentille gravitationnelle faible. L'intensité de l'effet dépend de la densité de masse : il est fort au cœur d'un amas de galaxies, et faible en périphérie.
