Le procédé d'obtention d'un non-tissé comporte deux phases principales : une phase qui procède à la formation de la nappe et une phase de liage qu'on appelle la consolidation de la nappe. En premier, à l'aide de cardes on réalise un voile de fibres appelé nappe. Cette nappe est formée de fibres réparties directionnellement ou au hasard et sans aucune cohésion. Ensuite, afin de consolider les fibres internes qui la forment, cette nappe est soumise aux opérations de liage. Une fois consolidée, la nappe, qui est un textile surfacique, peut être utilisée.
