La tela se compone de una urdimbre y una trama. La urdimbre es algo así como el esqueleto del tejido: consta de numerosos hilos que tienen aproximadamente la longitud de la futura pieza de tela y se hallan yuxtapuestos paralelamente, en forma de una cinta de la anchura del tejido. La trama no puede ser preparada de la misma manera y consiste en un solo hilo que se hace pasar por entre los hilos de la urdimbre, perpendicularmente a los mismos, de un borde a otro del tejido, primeramente en un sentido y luego en la dirección opuesta, y así sucesivamente.
