La zalcitabine est un analogue de synthèse d'un nucléoside naturel, la 2'-désoxycytidine, dont le groupement hydroxyde en position 3' a été remplacé par un atome d'hydrogène. Dans la cellule, la zalcitabine est convertie par un système enzymatique en son métabolite actif, le didésoxycytidine-5'-triphosphate (ddCTP), qui remplace le substrat naturel, le désoxycytidine-triphosphate (dCTP), de la transcriptase inverse du VIH et qui inhibe la réplication in vitro du VIH-1 en inhibant la synthèse de l'ADN viral. 2, record 1, French, - zalcitabine
