Isotope de l'uranium le plus abondant dans l'uranium naturel (plus de 99 %), permettant de produire le plutonium.

Les réacteurs conventionnels utilisent un mélange d'isotopes rares d'uranium-235 et d'isotopes plus communs d'uranium-238. L'uranium-235 n'est présent que pour 1 % dans l'uranium naturel et son extraction est coûteuse. Lorsqu'un atome d'uranium-235 absorbe un neutron, il se casse en éléments plus légers en libérant de l'énergie et deux ou trois neutrons.
