English

Subject field(s)
  • Industrial Techniques and Processes
DEF

The fabrication of [an object] by depositing or bonding successive layers of material [using a computer-aided design digital model].

OBS

3D printing: Some authors use the term "3D printing" to designate a type of additive manufacturing technology and therefore make a distinction between the terms "3D printing" and "additive manufacturing."

DEF

CONT

Three-dimensional printing process developed in 1966. Essentially a printed image is broken up into stereoscopic elements over which a plastic screen is superimposed to divide the picture into hundreds of tiny vertical strips. The screen focuses on the tiny strips in the picture and gives the viewer the illusion of depth.

CONT

CONT

At its most basic, multi-material 3D printing lets you use two or three resins in a single print job to simulate overmolding, or produce trays of assorted parts. Dramatically expanding the possibilities, software combines several resins in specific concentrations and microstructures to produce Digital Materials that vary in translucency, rigidity, thermal resistance and color. This lets you incorporate a full range of material properties in a single print job.
