A chemical compound [which] is the simplest geminal diol, and formally the second simplest carbohydrate (after formaldehyde).

The chemical equilibrium between formaldehyde (HCHO) and its hydrated form, methanediol (CH2(OH)2), is computationally investigated in solvent water.
