A tin-white malleable ductile toxic bivalent metallic element capable of a high polish and emitting a crackling sound when bent, occurring in greenockite and also in small amounts in ores of zinc from which it is separated as a by-product, and used chiefly in the protective electroplating of iron and steel and in the manufacture of bearing metals.

Métal blanc, analogue au zinc, qu'il accompagne souvent dans ses gisements. Élément chimique de symbole Cd. Numéro atomique : 48. [...] Le cadmium se rencontre à l'état de sulfure (greenockite), mais il accompagne surtout le zinc dans des blendes et les calamines.

En raison de son grand pouvoir absorbant pour les neutrons lents, le cadmium est très employé sous forme de barres de commande dans les réacteurs; il sert également dans le blindage contre les neutrons dans les appareils de mesure.
