Le mélange d'éthanol et d'essence (éthanol 85 % et 15 % d'essence) produit un carburant de remplacement appelé E85, qui est utilisé dans les véhicules à carburant flexible, et sont mis à la disposition des constructeurs automobiles américains et étrangers.

Comme carburant, l’éthanol 85 est beaucoup plus écologique que l’essence, qui contribue largement aux changements climatiques. On estime qu’un litre de bio-éthanol substitué à un litre d’essence permet de réduire de 70 % l’accumulation dans l’atmosphère du dioxyde de carbone, un gaz à effet de serre.
