Record 1 2026-04-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Spacecraft
DEF

... a shield that evaporates when heated, thereby absorbing thermal energy and protecting the underlying structure from heat damage.

CONT

The heat shield is one of the most critical elements of the Orion spacecraft, protecting Orion and the astronauts as they enter Earth's atmosphere ... Measuring 16.5 feet in diameter, it's the largest ablative heat shield in the world. The outer surface is made of blocks of an ablative material called Avcoat, a reformulated version of the material used on the Apollo capsules. During descent, the Avcoat ablates, or burns off in a controlled fashion, transporting heat away from Orion.

CONT

To protect the Apollo command module from the extreme heat of reentry, NASA chose an ablative heat shield composed of a brazed steel honeycomb substructure, a fiberglass honeycomb shell filled with phenolic epoxy resin.

Domaine(s)
  • Engins spatiaux
DEF

CONT

Ablative coatings are used on spacecraft to protect astronauts from heat during reentry, as well as on missiles and rockets. The particular ablative coatings a painting contractor uses for your building are not much different. An ablative coating typically must be applied at about 1mm thickness, and forms an excellent passive fire protection option for a range of industries, especially oil/gas and power. Some common applications include electrical cables, oil or gas pipes, and other locations at risk for extremely high temperature fires.

DEF

A plate in which the laser physically ablates or removes portions of the emulsion during the imaging process.

OBS

These plates use layers of ink-repellent silicon on top of the aluminum substrate to define the non-inking portion of the plate. One variation of this technology uses a laser to ablate the silicon from the substrate in the image areas of the plate. Another uses a laser to transfer material from a donor layer to the aluminum substrate.

  • Équipement (Imprimerie et arts graphiques)
  • Clicherie (Imprimerie)
DEF

CONT

Erodible/ablative paints consist of two components: the paint matrix and the biocide. Seawater movement against ships' hull polishes off the matrix and the biocide leaches out. The leaching rate will not be constant, because the biocide is not even homogeneously dispersed in the paint matrix. Secondly, the solubility of paint matrix and of incorporated biocides may not be identical.

DEF

A material, especially a coating material, designed to provide thermal protection to a body in a fluid stream through loss of mass.

OBS

Ablating materials are used on the surfaces of some reentry vehicles to absorb heat by removal of mass, thus blocking the transfer of heat to the rest of the vehicle and maintaining temperatures within design limits. Ablating materials absorb heat by increasing in temperature and changing in chemical or physical state. The heat is carried away from the surface by a loss of mass (liquid or vapor). The departing mass also blocks part of the convective heat transfer to the remaining material in the same manner as transpiration cooling.

The removal of tissue by vaporization is called "ablation." During ablation as tissue vaporizes, the position of the tissue surface, where tissue and air meet, moves deeper into the tissue. One is drilling a hole into the tissue. The velocity at which the hole becomes deeper is called the "ablation velocity."
