Feedstock is fed into a digester where air is forced through the material to encourage the growth of aerobic microbes. The process is exothermic and the heat is maintained at thermophilic conditions of between 55-65°C. The retention time of the process is usually between two and five days, as degradation is rapid. Following digestion the digestate is usually dewatered or dried. The output is a bio-fertiliser. 1, record 2, English, - thermophilic%20aerobic%20digestion

Correctly-stabilized sludge has no smell and is easy to drain. On leaving the stabilization tank, it appears as a brown liquor of even consistency, in which the coarse organic matter from the raw water has been dispersed and considerably reduced in volume. This qualitative definition of stabilized sludge, which is easily understood by anyone who has experience of operating an aerobic digestion unit has been considered insufficient by a number of specialists. 2, record 3, English, - aerobic%20digestion%20facility

1, record 3, French, - poste%20de%20digestion%20a%C3%A9robie
