The Strasbourg Agreement established an international system for the classification of patent documents to identify note worthy technical content. The purpose behind the agreement is to replace the individual classification systems of national patent offices by a uniform classification system for patent documents of all member countries, thus facilitating information retrieval and international comparisons.
