The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs was plit in two in 2024.

OBS

The Department of the Commissioner of Agriculture and Public Works was established March 4, 1868. The name changed in 1874 to Department of the Commissioner of Agriculture and Arts, although not officially changed until March 2, 1877. Prior to the formation of the Ontario Department of Agriculture, agricultural administration in Upper Canada was handled by a Board of Agriculture, later named the Bureau of Agriculture. Name changed in 1885 to Department of Agriculture, although not officially changed until March 23, 1888, and again May 18, 1966 to Department of Agriculture and Food. A further name change occurred April 1, 1972 to Ministry of Agriculture and Food. In March 1994, the ministry expanded its mandate to include rural community development and so changed its name to Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

A commercial firm that utilizes agricultural raw materials and whose activities cover the entire agricultural process from production to distribution.

The term "agribusiness" refers to a concept radically different from the traditional farm. It can be a specialized small- or large-scale farming business or it can be a firm that provides the inputs and services (for ex. seed, credit, etc.), processes the output (for ex. milk, grain, meat, etc.), manufactures the food products (for ex. ice cream, bread, breakfast cereals, etc.), or transports and sells the food products to consumers (for ex. restaurants, supermarkets, etc.). This concept may also include agro-industrial firms that manufacture machinery, equipment, pesticides, etc.

For some authors, "agribusiness" is a broader concept that includes the agro-industrial sector, normally upstream from the agribusiness sector, that involves the manufacturing and selling of products such as feed, seed, pesticides, fertilizer, tools, equipment, plants, or animals, etc.
