The literature of psychology describes the instant of insight and release in puzzle or problem solving as the aha (sometimes ah-ah) experience.

Our everyday prototype of strategy discovery seems to be Archimedes' insight in the bathtub concerning how to find out whether the king's crown was made from pure gold. Within this prototype, strategy discovery involves a sudden burst of understanding and is accompanied by a conscious 'aha' (or 'Eureka') experience; the discoverer not only uses the strategy for the first time but immediately understands why it works and what types of problems it can solve. The appeal of this view lies not only in its drama but also in its simplicity. Discovery is seen as involving a sudden, discontinuous change from not knowing to knowing.

The student regularly experiences the "aha-phenomenon", for it is not too much of an exaggeration to regard his program as his own scientific theory to be developed by exploring cause-and-effect questions.

A retaining wall, fence, or hedge hidden from view in a ditch; often used to improve the view from a house or main building while keeping out livestock.

A barrier in the form of a trench, particularly one used in country houses built in the eighteenth and nineteenth century, to prevent livestock from crossing into the garden.

The use of the ha-ha, or sunken fence, to create and at the same time conceal the physical division between garden and contiguous park grounds (a division needed to keep grazing animals out of the garden) was a major step in the creation of the new, "natural" garden. Walpole explains the purpose of the visual unification: The contiguous ground of the park without the sunk fence was to be harmonized with the lawn within; and the garden in its turn was to be set free from its prime regularity, that it might assort with the wilder country without.
