Le syndrome d'immunodéficience acquise a obtenu très précocement son sigle avec S.I.D.A., mais il manquait un substantif, pour désigner non pas l'affection mais la discipline qui étudie la maladie. Cette lacune a été comblée par la Commission Générale de la Terminologie. La spécialité est désignée par le terme «sidénologie», elle est exercée par des sidénologues qui prennent en charge des malades appelés sidéens qui eux souffrent d'être immunoprives.
