A chacune de ces caractéristiques du grain sont associés une technologie de triage et un type d'appareil que l'opérateur utilisera pour séparer les graines selon cette caractéristique. Un nettoyeur-séparateur va permettre de trier uniquement sur la largeur, l'épaisseur et selon le comportement du flux de graines dans un courant d'air en aspirant les déchets légers.
