Air pressure differential is the principle on which the vacuum driven gyro instruments operate. A vacuum pump run by the airplane engine creates a partial vacuum in the system. A filtered air inlet upstream of the gyros allows air to rush into the system causing the gyro wheels to spin.

La pression d'air différentielle est le principe de fonctionnement des instruments gyroscopiques à dépression. Une pompe à dépression (ou pompe à vide) entraînée par le moteur de l'avion crée une dépression partielle à l'intérieur du système. Une prise d'air filtrée, située en amont des gyroscopes, permet à l'air de s'engouffrer dans le système et de faire tourner les roues du gyroscope.
