Record 1 2026-01-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Operations (Air Forces)
DEF

... aircraft [which] closely resemble fighters but are designed to operate at lower altitudes and to carry rockets or other forms of missiles for use against ground targets. They may also be used as dive bombers.

OBS

These planes are generally somewhat larger than the high-altitude fighters, with one or more engines mounted either in the fuselage or outboard on the wings. They are sometimes designed for extremely low-level attack, approaching their targets by following the profile of the ground at altitudes of 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30 metres).

CONT

In terms of numbers this is the most important category of combat aircraft; yet, if the media area is to be believed, the general public have never heard of it, so attack aircraft have to be called either "fighters" or "bombers". Their origin lay in aircraft of 1916-18 called ground strafers or trench fighters which were armoured to survive in close proximity to a land battle whilst doing what they could to harass the enemy land forces.
