Record 1 2012-06-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Biochemistry
DEF

An organic acid containing both a basic amino group (NH2) and an acidic carboxyl group (COOH); thus they are amphoteric and exist in aqueous solution as dipolar ions.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
  • Biochimie
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Biochemistry
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Biotechnology
OBS

Most prokaryotes, many simple eukaryotes, and plants can synthesize all 20 amino acids used in protein synthesis from simple organic precursors and metabolic intermediates. Mammals and other animals can only synthesize a subset of these amino acids (12 nonessential amino acids). The remaining amino acids (8 essential amino acids) must be obtained from the diet.

CONT

The twenty amino acids found in nature are all playing a vital role in the survival and proliferation of the cell. An important aspect of the biological scientist's research is how these amino acids are utilised by the cell and particularly which enzymes are involved in these processes and how. Our main interest is focusing on the aromatic amino acids' metabolism and more specifically in a family of enzymes involved in this metabolism, the aromatic amino acid hydroxylases ...
