La pompe ACP (analgésie contrôlée par le patient), est composée d'une seringue ou d'un réservoir qui contient un médicament (un antalgique de type morphine ou un anesthésique local) pour calmer la douleur et d'un dispositif le plus souvent électronique que le patient commande par un bouton-poussoir. En appuyant sur ce bouton, le patient soulage lui-même sa douleur en s'administrant une dose du médicament. La pompe est programmée par le médecin pour contrôler la douleur le mieux possible avec le maximum de sécurité et de confort.
