WDXRF (wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence) separation is achieved by diffraction, using an analyzer crystal that acts as a grid. The specific lattice of the crystal selects the correct wavelengths according to Bragg's Law.

La spectrométrie de fluorescence X à dispersion de longueurs d'ondes (WD-XRF) est une technique d'analyse multi-élémentaire non destructive. […] Son principe de fonctionnement est le suivant : lorsque la matière est bombardée par un flux de photons X d'énergie suffisante, elle émet des rayons de même nature, caractéristiques des éléments qui la constituent. C'est le phénomène de fluorescence X. La séparation des raies d'émission est réalisée par diffraction sélective sur un cristal analyseur (application de la loi de Bragg). Le nombre de photons émis est alors mesuré par un compteur proportionnel.
