Anecdotal records allow educators to record qualitative information, like details about a child's specific behaviour or the conversation between two children. These details can help educators plan activities, experiences and interventions.

CONT

The anecdotal behavior record is a series of recordings of actual behavior responses of children in situations which arise both in and out of the classroom. It is kept, preferably, by several persons … Anecdotes carefully recorded over a period of time give an objective picture of the personality of the child in action.

Record 7 2012-07-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Education Theory and Methods
  • Educational Psychology
DEF

A technique by which a student's behavior and responses are recorded by the teachers observing them.

CONT

[The] anecdotal method is frequently used in schools. In this method, a student’s work, behaviour or an important event of his life is mentioned. This method is more useful for teachers because being overworked they forget about student’s special behavior. Hence, whenever a teacher finds an event or behaviour of a student to be of special significance, he must note it down in the anecdotal record.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Théories et méthodes pédagogiques

DEF

Record 8 2012-05-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Epidemiology
DEF

Data based on the description of individual cases rather than controlled studies.

CONT

Additionally, anecdotal data may lack quantitative specifics and can come from sources that are not peer reviewed such as the popular media. In the epidemiology context, anecdotal data refers specifically to case studies, but other disciplines use the term to refer to pieces of information that are based on casual observations rather than rigorous or scientific analysis.

OBS

The plural of "datum" is "data." When "data" is used as a plural term, it may be perceived as a collective noun, which takes a singular verb. However, "data" can take a plural verb if attention is being focused on each individual piece of data (e.g. The data were transferred.). In both cases, the French equivalent should be in the plural form.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Épidémiologie
DEF

[...] informations tirées de descriptions de cas ou d'événements, par opposition à des données recueillies systématiquement qui peuvent être soumises à des tests statistiques.

CONT

Les données anecdotiques doivent être interprétées avec prudence, mais elles permettent parfois d'élaborer des hypothèses.
