When angiogenic growth factors are produced in excess of angiogenesis inhibitors, the balance is tipped in favor of blood vessel growth. When inhibitors are present in excess of stimulators, angiogenesis is stopped. The normal, healthy body maintains a perfect balance of angiogenesis modulators. In general, angiogenesis is "turned off" by with more inhibitors being produced than stimulators. Tumors are known to express large amounts of angiogenic growth factors to recruit their own blood supply. 1, record 1, English, - angiogenic%20growth%20factor

1, record 1, French, - facteur%20de%20croissance%20angiog%C3%A9nique

Because of the prominent noevascularization observed in the growth of brain tumors, we studies the occurrence of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) a potent angiogenic factor in astrocytomas, the most aggressive of which often have marked vascular hyperplasia. Using immunohistochemical methods, we examined 21 examples of such tumors, 7 glioblastomas multiform, 7 anaplastic astrocytomas, and 7 low grade astrocytomas. Results suggest a possible role for bFGF in tumor growth and in angiogenesis in astrocytomes. 2, record 2, English, - angiogenic%20factor
