A unit of linear measurement in the centimeter-gram-second system equivalent to 10-10 metre, i.e. 1/10 000 000 000 metre.

OBS

Named in honour of Swedish physicist Anders J. Angström (1814 -1874). ... It equals 10-10 metre, 10-8 centimetre, 10-4 micron, or 10-1 millimicron. Such ultramicroscopic distances as the dimensions of atoms, molecules, unit cells and short wavelengths are expressed in angstroms.

As a unit, the initial letter of angstrom is sometimes capitalized.

The closest "equivalent" SI unit is the nanometre (1 nm = 10 Å). (SI: International System of Units).

An instrument developed by K. Angstrom for measuring the effective terrestrial radiation.

Angstrom pyrgeometer. ... It consists of four manganin strips, of which two are blackened and two are polished. The blackened strips are allowed to radiate to the atmosphere while the polished strips are shielded. The electrical power required to equalize the temperature of the four strips is taken as a measure of the solar radiation.

CONT

Regular daily observations with Angstrom pyrgeometers have been taken at the four stations with some limitations. It can only be used at night when there is no precipitation and the winds are light.

An absolute instrument developed by Swedish physicist Knut Johan Angstrom ... for the measurement of direct solar radiation.

OBS

The radiation receiver station consists of two identical manganin strips whose temperatures are measured by attached thermocouples. One of the strips is shaded, while the other is exposed to sunlight. An electrical heating current is passed through the shaded strip so as to raise its temperature to that of the exposed strip. The electric power required to accomplish this is a measure of the solar radiation.

Deux lames de manganin noircies constituent le détecteur. Elles sont placées au fond d'un tube dont la longueur n'autorise qu'un angle d'ouverture de l'ordre de 5°. On expose l'une des lames au rayonnement, l'autre maintenue dans l'obscurité est parcourue par un courant électrique. On règle l'intensité du courant afin d'amener cette dernière à la température de la lame sous éclatement. Un thermocouple aux soudures collées sur les faces postérieures de ces lames contrôle l'équilibre thermique. Le rayonnement solaire direct se déduit du courant électrique nécessaire à cette compensation.
