[...] l'écorce d'un arbre est constituée de cellules et tissus vivants (assises méristématiques, phloème et phelloderme) et de structures faites de cellules mortes appelées rhytidomes. Suivant le type de rhytidomes l'aspect extérieur de l'écorce diffère. Avec un rhytidome annulaire, l'écorce aura tendance à se desquamer par lambeaux ou par fibres. Ce sont en général des écorces relativement fines.
