ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE [8 records]

Record 1 2019-11-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
  • Pharmacology
CONT

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them. When bacteria become resistant, antibiotics cannot fight them, and the bacteria multiply.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Microbiologie et parasitologie
  • Pharmacologie
OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
  • Biotechnology
CONT

The use of antibiotic resistance markers has elicited a number of questions about environmental safety and human health. Antibiotic resistance markers are critical tools for the development of genetically modified crops. They are used as selectable markers in the process of building and transferring gene constructs.

CONT

Antibiotic resistance marker genes have been commonly used in the development of GMOs and the issues of concerns that might arise from this are debated repeatedly.

Key term(s)
  • anti-biotic resistance marker
  • antibiotic resistance gene marker

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique
  • Biotechnologie
CONT

OBS

The Canadian Integrated Program for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance (CIPARS) monitors trends in antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance in selected bacterial organisms from human, animal and food sources across Canada. The program is based on several representative and methodologically unified surveillance components which can be linked to examine the relationship between antimicrobials used in food-animals and humans and the associated health impacts.

OBS

The efficacy of antibiotic resistance (barrier) precautions for control of aminoglycoside resistance was evaluated from 1978 to 1981. Despite increasing aminoglycoside use and a 13-fold increase in aminoglycoside-resistant isolates on a newly opened oncology unit, the hospital-wide frequency of aminoglycoside resistant Enterobacterioceae remained low, supporting the continued value of barrier precautions which were initiated in our hospital in 1974.
