Les tufs pyroclastiques résultent de l'écoulement de fragments pyroclastiques, liquéfiés par l'eau ou par des gaz volcaniques, qui finissent souvent par constituer d'épaisses accumulations dans les vallées et les dépressions. Les matières pyroclastiques formées de cette façon peuvent être composées de «lave vive» solidifiée, de fragments de «lave inerte» issue d'éruptions antérieures, de fragments pyroclastiques également d'éruptions antérieures ou de fragments de roches arrachés aux parois du substrat lorsque les fluides volcaniques montent à la surface.

[...] Les matériaux mis en place à basses températures, tels que les «coulées de ponce» de Crater Lake dans l'Oregon sont en grande partie non soudés dans les dépôts épais. Les tufs soudés à haute température du sud-est de l'Idaho sont densément soudés en couches très minces. La plupart des tufs soudés sont probablement mis en place à des températures intermédiaires entre ces extrêmes. [...] On pense que certaines coulées de cendres sont liées génétiquement à des plutons proches de la surface dont certains sont de grande taille et de nature complexe.

A density current, generally a highly heated mixture of volcanic gases and ash, traveling down the flanks of a volcano or along the surface of the ground; produced by the explosive disintegration of viscous lava in a volcanic crater, or by the explosive emission of gas-charged ash from a fissure or group of fissures.
