La bataille de la crête de Vimy se déroule au cours de la Première Guerre mondiale entre le 9 et le 12 avril 1917 sur les territoires de Vimy et Givenchy-en-Gohelle dans le Pas-de-Calais. Le site, dominant la plaine de Lens et fortifié par l'armée allemande avait fait l'objet de multiples attaques infructueuses de la part des armées françaises et britanniques, notamment en 1915. Le 9 avril 1917, quatre divisions canadiennes unissent leurs forces et passent à l'assaut. In 1922, the French nation agreed to the cession to Canada of the use of a tract of land on Vimy Ridge to erect a monument to the memory of the Canadian soldiers who died on the Field of Honour in France during the War of 1914-1918.
