Blue carbon refers to carbon dioxide that is absorbed from the atmosphere and stored in the ocean. "Blue" refers to the watery nature of this storage. The vast majority of blue carbon is carbon dioxide that has dissolved directly into the ocean. Much smaller amounts are stored in underwater sediments, coastal vegetation and soils; carbon-containing molecules, such as DNA and proteins; and ocean life from whales to phytoplankton. 3, record 1, English, - blue%20carbon

When adequately protected, coastal ecosystems, including salt marshes, mangroves and seagrass beds, offer carbon sequestration, and long-term carbon storage. By contrast, when these coastal habitats are destroyed, they change from being net carbon sinks to net carbon emitters. This project advances the conservation and restoration of coastal blue carbon habitats by improving data, mapping and approaches to develop and apply the appropriate carbon budgets. 3, record 2, English, - blue%20carbon%20habitat

2, record 2, French, - habitat%20de%20carbone%20bleu

The ocean's vegetated habitats, in particular mangroves, salt marshes and seagrasses, are earth's blue carbon sinks and account for more than 50%, perhaps as much as 71%, of all carbon storage in ocean sediments. 3, record 3, English, - blue%20carbon%20sink
