The Korean war erupted when the forces of North Korea launched a surprise attack on South Korea on June 25, 1950. Up to the Korea Armistice Agreement, concluded on July 27, 1953, a total of 26,791 Canadians saw service during the war there. There were 516 fatal casualties. The decision to create a Book of Remembrance for Korea, and so honour those who died there, was announced on November 26, 1957.
