DEF

The portion of the frame that contains the crankset bearing, called the bottom bracket.

Record 2 2012-07-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Sports Equipment and Accessories
  • Cycling
DEF

The axle which passes through the bottom bracket of the bicycle frame to which the chainwheels and cranks are attached.

CONT

Inside the bottom bracket is an assembly of bearing and a spindle that rotates. Attached on either end of the spindle are the crank arms, and at the end of each crank arm is a pedal.

CONT

Running through the bottom bracket shell, and anchored in place by cups and ball bearings allowing it to turn freely, is a spindle of forged steel to which the cranks are attached. When the rider stands on the pedals, the forces acting on the spindle are enormous, the weight and the strength of the rider being multiplied by the leverage of the cranks.

CONT

The bottom bracket axle (or spindle) rotates on bearings inside the bottom bracket shell.

OBS

The term "spindle" can be used to mean the stationary sheath around the axle or, as in this case, the actual revolving axle.

Record 3 2003-03-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Sports Equipment and Accessories
  • Cycling
OBS

The bottom bracket bearings create a non-separable unit consisting of the shaft made of case-hardened steel and the cylindrical bush made of bearing steel. The raceways for two rows of balls are created by grinding directly on the shaft and in the cylindrical bush. The balls are arranged in light one-sided cages made of plastic. The bearings are filled with a quality grease which provides reliable lubrication during the life of the bearing.

Record 5 1993-11-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cycling
DEF

The distance between a bicycle's bottom bracket and the ground.

CONT

Generally bikes with a short wheelbase, steep angles, and high bottom brackets are designed for manoeuvrability and sprinting; those with a longer wheelbase and shallow angles are designed for touring and easy riding. Angles today run from about 70° to 74°, wheel bases from 38" to 42", and bottom bracket heights from 10½" to 11". Steep angles apparently give better steering, short wheelbases give both a sharper turn for a given front-wheel angle and easier acceleration when sprinting. High bottom brackets enable you to take a turn at maximum speed and keep on pedaling without scraping the inside pedal on the ground.

CONT

The smaller frame's bottom bracket height is higher, not because the rider wants it that way, but because the low bottom bracket would cause the down tube to interfere with the front wheel.
