Bottom longlines have a mainline weighted to the seafloor with buoy lines marked by flags on either end, called high flyers. Leaders, called gangions or snoods, with baited hooks are attached to the mainline. A longline set can have up to a thousand baited hooks and once deployed can soak anywhere from hours to days.

La palangre de fond est utilisée par les pêcheurs professionnels pour capturer de nombreuses espèces, comme le merlan, le merlu, le congre, la dorade ou le bar. Cet engin est constitué d'une ligne principale, appelée «maîtresse» ou «ligne mère», sur laquelle sont fixés, à intervalles réguliers, des bas de lignes, ou «avançons», terminés chacun par un hameçon. Les extrémités de la ligne mère sont raccordées par des agrafes à des orins reliés à un lest dans leur partie inférieure et à une bouée de signalisation dans leur partie supérieure.
