Bottom longlines have a mainline weighted to the seafloor with buoy lines marked by flags on either end, called high flyers. Leaders, called gangions or snoods, with baited hooks are attached to the mainline. A longline set can have up to a thousand baited hooks and once deployed can soak anywhere from hours to days.

Cet engin est constitué d'une ligne principale, appelée «maîtresse» ou «ligne mère», sur laquelle sont fixés, à intervalles réguliers, des bas de lignes, ou «avançons», terminés chacun par un hameçon. Les extrémités de la ligne mère sont raccordées par des agrafes à des orins reliés à un lest dans leur partie inférieure et à une bouée de signalisation dans leur partie supérieure.
