La pétanque se joue avec des boules d'acier et un but, plus souvent appelé «cochonnet», «bouchon» ou «petit». L'objectif est, pour chaque équipe, de placer le plus grand nombre de ses boules le plus près du but. Chaque boule ainsi placée vaut un point. On peut y jouer à deux (3 boules chacun), c'est le tête-à-tête. La doublette se joue à quatre joueurs (trois boules chacun). Enfin, la triplette se joue à six joueurs (trois contre trois, deux boules chacun). Il ne peut y avoir plus de douze boules sur le terrain. En général, il existe deux types de joueurs dans les équipes : le pointeur, celui qui place et boules, et le tireur, celui qui déplace les boules de l'adversaire.
