Record 1 2003-05-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Structural Framework
  • Tunnels, Overpasses and Bridges
  • Mechanical Construction
DEF

A hollow beam whose cross-section is shaped like a box. It uses material where it is most highly stressed both by bending moments and by twisting moments. Consequently it is used for large spans and for locations where eccentric loading etc. causes torsion.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Charpentes
  • Tunnels, viaducs et ponts
  • Construction mécanique
DEF

Poutre à section transversale fermée et évidée.

DEF

Poutre constituant un caisson de pont.

CONT

The cross section of a bridge can be either a solid web or three-dimensional truss box girder or beams, both for steel and concrete.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sortes de béton
CONT

La coupe transversale d'un pont peut être un caisson à âmes pleines ou triangulées, ou des poutres, que le matériau soit de l'acier ou du béton.

Record 5 1994-11-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Types of Concrete
CONT

One of the competitors offered an alternative solution which...allowed a decrease in pier size on the one hand and by using variable inertia box girders, enabled 120-m spans without increasing the deck cost on the other hand.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sortes de béton
CONT

Un concurrent a d'ailleurs présenté en variante une solution qui [...] permettait d'une part, de réduire l'importance des piles en adoptant des caissons à inertie variable, et autorisait, d'autre part, une portée de 120 m sans augmentation du coût du tablier.

Record 7 1994-11-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Types of Concrete
CONT

As steel density is three times greater than that of concrete, the steel box girder deck should thus be half the weight of the concrete deck.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sortes de béton
CONT

La densité de l'acier étant 3 fois supérieure à celle du béton, on devrait donc s'attendre à un tablier caisson acier 2 fois moins lourd que le tablier béton.

CONT

In Germany, where post-World War II reconstruction provided engineers with a unique opportunity to display skill and originality in the field of bridge design, it has been found that for general road bridges of under 200 m. span the steel box girder is usually most economical.

OBS

Box girder or box beam: A hollow, square or rectangular girder made of steel or light alloy, or reinforced or prestressed concrete, or timber. Steel box girders caused alarm in the early 1970s because two bridges which were being built then collapsed ....
