Record 2 2012-02-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Climatology
DEF

A non-dynamic assessment of the material quantity or energy in various compartments of an ecosystem, and of the fluxes between the compartments.

CONT

A one-dimensional ecosystem box model is presented for carrying capacity assessment. The model includes physical and biological processes. The physical processes are the transport of nutrients, suspended matter and phytoplankton through the system boundaries and between model boxes. The biological processes are primary production and oyster (Crassostrea gigas) population dynamics and physiology. The model was implemented using an object-oriented approach.

DEF

Record 6 1988-05-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
  • Air Pollution
  • Atmospheric Physics
CONT

In order to predict the atmospheric concentrations of sulphur dioxide and sulphates down wind of source regions several phenomena must be quantitatively accounted for: 1. atmospheric transport and diffusion [;] 2. precipitation scavenging [;] 3. dry deposition at the earth's surface [;] 4. conversion of SO2 to sulphates. The simplest approach to solving this problem uses a "trajectory box model" with appropriate parameterization of items 2 to 4 above. This type of model has been applied in Europe and is presently being adopted to the North American scene by the Atmospheric Environment Service.
