[The Boxer cartridge was] invented in 1865 by the … Chief of British Ordnance, Colonel Boxer … The Boxer cartridge case, instead of being made of solid drawn copper, was formed by rolling a thin brass plate around a mandrel, and after soldering, attaching an iron base to it. The bullet had a hollow base with a clay plug.

Dans la cartouche Boxer[,] adoptée en Angleterre, une douille en clinquant, renforcée par deux culots métalliques s’emboitant l'un dans l'autre, reçoit une plaque à rebord au fond, pour permettre l'extraction. Ces diverses parties sont reliées entre elles par une cuvette d'amorce percée d'un évent, qui est elle-même engagée et fortement sertie contre les parois par une rondelle en papier comprimé.
