... Sampras pulled off the first break of the match in the third game of the second set, broke again two games later, and slowly took control.

Sometimes colloquially called "breaker". Although "service" and "serve" are synonyms, one does not say "serve break". Compare with "break service", the verb.

Subject field(s)

DEF

To win a game served by an opponent.

CONT

Huber, the No. 12-ranked player in the world, broke Pierce at love in the opening game of the match and then outslugged her from the baseline for most of the rest of it.

OBS

The "break point" is potentially the last point of a game being won by the receiver. If the receiver wins it, he breaks. If the server wins it, he prolongs the game and may eventually pull out a victory.

OBS

Because the server is generally conceded to have an advantage, the winning of a game on the opponent's serve is an important step toward winning the set. The German equivalent given is in nominal form.

OBS

Related terms: (service) break, to break back.

DEF
