This approach differs from the traditional design/build process, as the design team examines the integration of all building components and systems and determines how they best work together to save energy and reduce environmental impact.

Qu'est-ce que la conception intégrée? De plus en plus reconnue, la conception intégrée est une méthode de conception qui consiste à regrouper l'ensemble des intervenants impliqués dans le projet dès le début de la conception. Contrairement au processus de conception traditionnel où les intervenants s'impliquent d'une façon séquentielle (dans l'ordre : architecte, ingénieurs conseil, entrepreneur général et entrepreneurs spécialisés), le processus de conception intégrée propose que tous les intervenants travaillent ensemble dès le départ, lorsque les décisions sont les plus déterminantes. Ainsi, on retrouve à une même table l'architecte (souvent le maître d'œuvre), le client, les ingénieurs conseil et l'entrepreneur général. On peut aussi y retrouver le futur gestionnaire du bâtiment, un représentant des futurs usagers, des fournisseurs spécialisés et d'autres consultants. L'équipe multidisciplinaire peut ainsi arriver à des solutions plus novatrices qu'avec un processus traditionnel. De plus, le programme LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) du Conseil du bâtiment durable du Canada préconise cette approche.
