Ce nom systématique est recommandé depuis 1993 pour désigner le système hétérotricyclique constitué de deux cycles benzéniques ortho-condensés à la structure monocyclique 1,4-dihétéroatomique à six chaînons dans laquelle les deux hétéroatomes sont des atomes d'oxygène. Ce nom remplace les noms systématiques antérieurs dibenzo[b,e]dioxine, dibenzo-para-dioxine, dibenzo-p-dioxine et les noms fautifs de dibenzoparadioxine, dioxine, dibenzodioxine et dibenzodioxinne pour désigner le composé tricyclique.
