An alkaline extraction is normally placed after a chlorination stage whereby the lignin and other colour-contributing components react with the chlorine and, while partially soluble in the acidic chlorination solution, the chlorinated compounds easily dissolve in a warm alkaline solution and are removed. An extraction step is also placed before the final chlorine dioxide stage to complete the lignin removal. Although an extraction stage makes the pulp darker, it is essential for achieving high brightness levels with minimum use of chemicals in subsequent stages. 1, record 39, English, - alkaline%20extraction

2, record 39, French, - extraction%20alcaline

Product Oil Solution Extraction. Caustic extraction and solvent separation have been used to separate Albany products into neutral, acid and insoluble fractions. ... The separation was made by reacting the wood-derived product with excess aqueous 5% NaOH. The solution was then extracted with methylene chloride. The solvent was stripped from the organic layer to yield the neutral fraction. The aqueous phase was then reacidified with dilute HC1 and re-extracted with methylene chloride. The solvent was stripped from the organic phase to yield the acid fraction. The insolubles were filtered from the aqueous phase and dried. This particular scheme of extraction and separation was selected after several alternate techniques failed to provide adequate phase separation. 1, record 42, English, - caustic%20extraction
