Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 DEF
A word in a second language that is quite close to its equivalent in the mother tongue but only in terms of its spelling, not in meaning. 6, record 5, English, - false%20cognate
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The similarity may cause a second language learner to use the word wrongly. For exemple the French word "expérience" means "experiment", and not "experience". French learners of English might thus write or say: Yesterday we performed an interesting experience in the laboratory. 7, record 5, English, - false%20cognate
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 OBS
false cognate; false friend: According to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia (source en.wikipedia.org), "false cognate" and "false friend" are not synonymous, but it is the only source consulted that makes a distinction between these terms: "The term false cognate is sometimes misused to describe false friends [...] False friends are pairs of words in two languages or letters in two alphabets that look or sound similar but differ in meaning. False cognates, by contrast, are words that, due to strange similarities in appearance and/or meaning, are often erroneously believed to share a common root, although the similarities are due to chance and unrelated word evolutions." 8, record 5, English, - false%20cognate

faux-amis : Mots qui, d'une langue à l'autre, semblent avoir le même sens parce qu'ils sont de même origine, mais qui ont en fait des sens différents par suite d'une évolution séparée. 5, record 5, French, - faux%20ami
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 DEF
Emploi d'un mot français dans un sens qu'il ne possède pas, sous l'influence d'un mot anglais qui a une forme semblable. 6, record 5, French, - faux%20ami
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 OBS
7, record 5, French, - faux%20ami
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 OBS
faux ami; faux-ami: Plusieurs ouvrages répertorient les graphies plurielles «faux-amis» et «faux amis» pour désigner les deux mots ou la paire de mots de langues différentes. 7, record 5, French, - faux%20ami
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 3 OBS
Contrairement à une idée couramment admise, c'est donc la désignation anglaise «false friend» qui est un calque du français. Les linguistes anglophones recourent d'ailleurs parfois à l'emprunt pur et simple de la forme «faux ami», les plus puristes préférant le terme «false cognate». 8, record 5, French, - faux%20ami
