The three main variants of cognitive behavior therapy are Ellis's rational emotive therapy (RET), Meichenbaum's self instructional training (SET), and Beck's cognitive therapy. All these therapies are broadly similar and all attempt to enable cognitive change, now frequently called cognitive restructuring.

Le modèle cognitif a pour fonction de fournir une représentation d'un système existant qui met en évidence les propriétés de ce système que l'on veut spécialement connaître, au détriment d'autres propriétés jugées moins intéressantes. En fait on ne dispose jamais d'une information complète sur le système étudié, et le modélisateur doit s'attacher surtout à choisir la bonne information et à en donner une représentation adéquate, aussi suggestive que possible.
