The arrangement of the beam-penetration CRT is similar to that of normal CRT's; the only unusual component is the multilayer phosphor, in which a layer of red phosphor is deposited behind the initial layer of green phosphor. If a fairly low-potential electron beam strikes the tube face, it excites only the red phosphor and therefore produces a red trace. When the accelerating potential is increased, the velocity of the beam striking the phosphor is greater, and as a result the beam penetrates into the green phosphor, increasing the green component of the light output.

Modern "glass cockpits" like those in the Boeing 777, the F-117 stealth fighter and Shuttle Atlantis represent a revolution in the way cockpits for aircraft and spacecraft are designed and built today. The first hints of this revolution appeared in the 1970s when flight-worthy cathode ray tube (CRT) screens began to replace a few of the electromechanical displays, gauges and instruments that had served so well for so long. These new "glass" instruments, as few and as primitive as they were, gave the cockpit a distinctly different look and suggested the name, "glass cockpit."

A sweep ramp provides the tuning voltage for a voltage-tuned oscillator and is simultaneously applied to the horizontal-deflection system of a cathode-ray-tube display. The local-oscillator frequency is mixed with the input signal to produce an intermediate frequency (IF). The IF is detected, filtered, and applied to the vertical deflection plates of the CRT [cathode-ray-tube].

The receiver has to have suitable pass band characteristics to deal with the pulse modulation side bands, and must be free from paralysis following reception of a large signal ... Its output is rectified and amplified and applied to the cathode-ray tube display, either as a deflexion or an intensity modulation. The cathode-ray tube is also supplied with a range time base ..., synchronized to the pulse transmission, and suitable calibration devices ... are usually also necessary. The form of the display unit depends on the particular radar application, and on what coordinate or coordinates other than range are to be presented. For example, in the plan position indicator the time base starts from the centre of the tube and goes radically outwards in a direction depending on the azimuth of the beamed aerials (which sweeps continuously), and the signal is presented as a spot intensifier.

The Seattle company states simply that the flight decks of the standard body B.757 and wide-body B.767 have a lot in common and will be certificated for a two-man crew. The [Boeing] 757 will be fitted with digital electronic instruments including colour CRT displays. The navigation and automatic flight management systems are also digital. Common to both are an inertial reference system using laser gyroscopes; a CRT presentation of the attitude director indicator and the horizontal situation indicator with an integrated multi-colour map; a flight management computer system; colour CRTs giving engine parameters; and a crew alerting system.
