C'est en 1820 que l'on commença à utiliser le fulminate de mercure pour faire des amorces à percussion aptes à enflammer la poudre dans les armes à feu. En 1864, la découverte, par Nobel, de la transmission de la détonation du fulminate à la nitroglycérine fut le point de départ de la fabrication des amorces détonantes, généralement appelées, maintenant, «détonateurs».
