Cyanides include metal cyanides such as KCN and NaCN, and complex salts of cyanides such as K3Fe(CN)6 and K4Fe(CN)6. Metal cyanides are called free cyanides [q.v.] and are very toxic.

Cyanide toxicity is caused by the free cyanides (HCN and CN-) that inhibit cytochrome oxidase and thereby suppress aerobic respiration. Fish are the most susceptible organisms - sensitive species exhibit chronic and lethal effects at as low as 5-7 and 20-76 grams/liter, respectively. The toxicity of complex cyanides is usually, but not always, low, but the degradation products often include free cyanides which are toxic. Free cyanides readily degrade in the open environment but persist in groundwater. They do not bioaccumulate. Sublethal effects in fish include reduced reproductive capacity (decreased egg number and viability, and reduced embryo and larval survival), impaired swimming ability, altered growth, and hepatic necrosis. Free cyanides are phytotoxic at higher concentrations than those associated with adverse effects in fish. 2, record 33, English, - free%20cyanide

2, record 33, Spanish, - cianuro%20libre

The extraction of gold and silver from their ores. The process is only applicable to these metals. The solvent is a weak solution of sodium or calcium cyanide which, when aerated, easily dissolves the precious metals. They are then recovered by agitating the "pregnant" solution with aluminium or zinc in the form of dust or shavings and filtering out the precipitate which is then melted and cast into bars (bullion). 4, record 47, English, - cyanide%20process
