Elle consiste dans la réalisation d'une série de cycles dont chacun comporte deux phases : l'une au cours de laquelle le front de combustion se propage à partir du puits d'injection jusqu'à quelques mètres de celui-ci, l'autre au cours de laquelle l'huile est produite par le même puits.
