In 1973, the Yukon Native Brotherhood and the Yukon Association of Non-Status Indians created the Council for Yukon Indians (CYI) to negotiate land claims for Status and non-Status Indians. The three groups later merged under the Council for Yukon Indians name and the group was renamed the Council of Yukon First Nations (CYFN) in 1995.

The Council of Yukon First Nations is a non-profit society working for ten of the First Nations of the Yukon. It has been in existence since 1973 and continues to serve the needs of First Nations within the Yukon and the MacKenzie delta.

En 1973, la Fraternité des Autochtones du Yukon et l’Association des Indiens non inscrits du Yukon ont créé le Conseil des Indiens du Yukon (CIY) afin de négocier les revendications territoriales des Indiens inscrits et non inscrits. Ultérieurement, les trois groupes ont fusionné pour devenir le Conseil des Indiens du Yukon et le groupe a été renommé Conseil des Premières nations du Yukon (CPNY) en 1995.

En 2012, Affaires autochtones et Développement du Nord Canada et le Bureau de la traduction ont recommandé les deux majuscules initiales au terme «Première Nation». Dans les appellations officielles, ce terme peut être orthographié différemment. Il faut alors respecter la graphie utilisée même si elle n'est pas conforme à cette recommandation.
